 | Dig
a hole approx. twice as large as the tree or shrub, this allows room for
additives and makes it much easier to plant
|
 | Use
a few inches of stone or gravel in the bottom to allow for drainage especially
when planting in clay soils.
|
 | Use
approx. 1/3 good earth, 1/3 manure and 1/3 peat moss when planting.
Separate roots. Always use
bone meal to encourage and strengthen root development.
|
 | Water
immediately after planting for at least 10-15 minutes.
When planting large trees, this time can be extended.
You may also add water in the bottom of the hole before planting for
extra moisture.
|
 | Use
guy wires and supports for large evergreens and trees for at least one year to
allow root establishment.
|
 | Don’t
let your plants dry out in hot weather! In sandy soils, you should water with
at least twice per week. Otherwise
one good watering will suffice. Water
heavily before winter freeze-up.
|
 | Don’t
drown your plants in wet weather! Water no more than once per week or 10 days,
but water generously when you do. Remember
natural rainfall or two hour lawn sprinkling usually isn’t enough.
You still have to hand water your plants during dry spells in the
spring and summer.
|
 | Remember
to always water before any fertilizer applications.
This will prevent too much fertilizer to be absorbed into the plant.
